BORDEAUX 2007 HARVEST REPORT

Bordeaux 2007 – A Drinker's Vintage
26th March 2008 - James Suckling commented on his blog "I just finished my first day in Bordeaux and I am happy."

The commenter is Senior Editor of America’s forerunner of Wine & Food publication, Wine Spectator. These are comforting words, considering the wet and gray weather in Bordeaux for most of the summer growing season. Thank God for a relatively sunny September and October last year that made a difference.

In 2007, the turnaround happened on 29th August. The unsettled months of May and June spun out the flowering with considerable fashion in the later part. Then June continued overcast and grey, and evolved into a dull, drizzly July, and, to cap it all, a cool, showery second half of August stretched the grapes’ resistance to the limit.

Then, suddenly the weather just blew itself out with a day of very heavy rain 29th August, and next morning, the high pressure systems returned, with dry, cool North-Easterly breezes replacing the wet depressionary Westerlies of the last four months The sun shone, and would shine permanently - apart from a few showers end September/early October – right up to early November. This sudden and lasting Indian summer was an amazing, unexpected and totally welcome phenomenon and it was to save the fortunes of the 2007 vintage.

In a Nutshell
2007 is a recovery vintage. We have experienced such vintages many times before: Even the great 2000 was not looking at all good until the weather suddenly changed in July.

2007 is certainly not a year for speculators. It's a drinkers' vintage. As for prices, Bordeaux is keeping mum about it. We certainly hoped that prices would be cheap considering the global economy at present. Moreover, the world market for Bordeaux has already put so much money into 2005 and 2006. And a lot of that has been on speculation.

The Wines
2007 Dry Whites - Picked in perfect conditions, with a permanently good forecast, everyone took their time, and could afford to wait until the optimum day for each parcel’s and each variety's total ripeness. General style is very pure, and the nature of the wines is of fresh, fine, tangy fruit, with pronounced acidities. But maybe the most important signal to their quality is that the people who made them really like them.

2007 Red Wines - The Merlots are very variable. The Merlots of the Right Bank will surely turn out stronger than those of the Left Bank, which will certainly turn out lighter. The Cabernets are generally very successful, both Franc on the Right Bank, not tremendously powerful but fresh and silky-textured, and Sauvignon on the Left, well-defined and smooth.

2007 Sweet Wines - Quite clearly Sauternes has had the best of the vintage. It will come as no surprise that 2007 has nothing to do with the regularly hot, dry years that produce the really rich, heavy Sauternes when the botrytis comes in a rush on already very concentrated grapes as in '05, '03, '90, '47, '21. It is rather in the family of long harvests, spun out over many pickings as the botrytis arrives throughout a dry Autumn, producing the finer more nervous style of wines like ’88, ’89 and ’01. The 2007 is awfully close to these vintages, which are themselves legends.
