Biodynamic: Fad or Future?
A buzzword in the wine world today, is biodynamics a mere trend, or is it here to stay? Let's hear from the first biodynamic estate in Medoc, Chateau Pontet-Canet.
Chateau Pontet-Canet is one of the 18 prestigious Bordeaux Classified Fifth Growth. Since 1989, a complete overhaul was implemented on its vineyards. By embracing biodynamic methods, the Chateau confidently asserts that they have allowed the terroir/sense of place to showcase its truest, genuine, bona fide self.
Horses (replacing tractors) are now a recurring theme in the vineyards. This simple act aerates the soils, producing arguably healthier and better quality fruits. Use of chemicals are abandoned; fertilizers are strictly organic. Winemaker Jean-Michel Comme maintains that "to work biodynamically means to ensure that the plant is as balanced as possible and in good health."
The wines of Chateau Pontet-Canet, and their quality are simply reflections of nature's glory. Be inspired by their first certified biodynamic 2008 - 2013 case.
