"Think of Clos des Papes as a Chateauneuf du Pape with the complexity of a top-notch Grand Cru Burgundy.."
- The Wine Advocate
This is no coincidence. Father-son owners Paul and Vincent Avril spent significant winemaking years polishing the art of elegance in Burgundy. Exhibiting finesse, rather than power, the Burgundian-influence is one of the drivers to Clos des Papes' rise to fame.
Dating back to 1896, founder of Clos des Papes, the first Paul Avril, was one of the key figures in establishing the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. Such was the estate's stature!
Their signature? Complexity derived from a blend of terroir. Thanks to vines that span 25 different plots, each with distinctive characteristics. From rocky soils to limestone and gravel soils, the ultimate blend produces remarkable depth of complexity.
Don't overlook the white wine. 4 hectares of cooler plots are specially reserved for Clos des Papes Blanc. The grapes used are Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Roussanne. Very, uniquely Chateauneuf du Pape. "Tangerine and lime aromas lead the way... plump and silky.. fine, elegant and lingering on the finish".
