Chile's Clos Apalta is one of the world's greatest red wines. It stands out from the rest of other highly regarded reds due to its dominant Carmenere grape in its blend. Extolled for its special aromatic profile, a good Carmenere offers plenty of spices, hints of chocolate and roasted red bell peppers. Clos Apalta is a wonderful example of the subtlety and depth that Carmenere can deliver.
Clos Apalta is a unique and extraordinary terroir for grape-growing. Surrounded by a horseshoe of the Coastal Mountains, it benefits by receiving two full hours of less sunlight. This effect slows down the grapes' ripening process, producing wines with elegance, good acidity, and freshness. It amazes many that a high alcohol wine does not taste heavy or overtly alcoholic.
Point to note is that the second wine Le Petit Clos Apalta 2016 scored a whopping 96 points by James Suckling, who claimed it was "juicy and delicious"!
