ONE IN A MILLION
Although we are tempted to say "there is only one such wine in this entire world". Sounds like an exaggeration. Except it is not.
The new release Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2018 scored 98-100 points by Wine Advocate. Yes, a potential 100 pointer (a wine to age! the best is yet to be!), which, to put it bluntly (arrogance unintended), is quite a no-brainer.
Let's get real. A wine's greatness stems from the vision of its creator. Late-owner Jacques Perrin was an intelligent man. At a time when Grenache was (and still is) hailed as the spiritual grape of Chateauneuf du Pape, Jacques Perrin saw what others didn't: the difficult Mourvedre grape. Today, the wine industry pays homage to this great man for giving us the chance to savour an unbelievable wine, made predominantly of Mourvedre, most planted over 70 years ago in the best Beaucastel parcels.
The wine is so incredibly mind-blowing that it was the first-ever Rhone wine granted access to the "Place de Bordeaux" marketed alongside other spectacular Bordeaux wines. And it is not even a Bordeaux wine! Legendary.
If you've always heard this unique wine referred to as "an iron fist in a velvet glove", or "elegance with power", or "grace with muscle", you now know Mourvedre must have played a significant role.
Only about 300 cases are produced for every vintage released. Rarity.
What is even rarer? We only have 6 bottles.
